In the Game

Before the events of Jumpstart Reading for First Graders, Mel was a magician who liked to play mean jokes on people in the carnival, mostly on the clowns who he has never liked. He was quite jealous of his assistant Katia, a hard worker who diligently practiced her magic.

Eventually, Mel went too far with his jokes, and the ringmaster fired him, replacing him with Katia. Mel was so angry that he turned all the performers into puzzle pieces and hid them somewhere in the carnival, leaving their finding up to Frankie and the player of the game.

Mel frequently (not always) appears when the player enters the activity selection where he pulls 1 of 3 pranks:

  • Attaching a rocket to a rabbit's back making him zoom away
  • Dropping a beehive on a clown's head
  • Making some balloons carry a panda in the sky

Mel also appears in Samson's Weight Match where he mixes up Samson's weights every time the player earns a ticket.

Samson appears when all the performers have been freed. He's devastated by his prank being ruined when the clowns tackle him and drag him away.

Mel appears one last time during the ending show where he performs with the clowns dressed as a baby. The clowns smash his head through several objects until they blast him through the roof with a cannon.
